Diagnostic Services

Your eye examination will include an evaluation of the health of your eyes and surrounding tissue, the clarity of your vision at distance and near, and the efficiency of your eye co-ordination skills, focusing skills and sensory systems.

During the course of the eye examination, we may use eye drops to enable more a more detailed assessment of your visual system. Using these drops we are often better able to detect eye diseases such as glaucoma, disorders of the retina and optic nerve, and cataracts. We are also better able to evaluate the progression of systemic disease such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The drops are placed in your eyes at the end of the visual assessment. They take about 20 minutes to take effect, after which the doctor will complete the eye health assessment. The drops will affect your vision for about 4 hours, during which time bright light will be bothersome and near vision blurred. If you do not have sunglasses with you, disposable sunglasses will be provided free of charge. If you do not feel comfortable driving, please arrange for alternate transportation. If you have any questions about the effects of the drops, please ask the doctor. You have the option of returning for the eye drops portion of the exam on another day.

Treatment Services

In addition to diagnosis of eye disease, our optometrists are certified in the treatment and management of eye disease. We prescribe eye drops and oral medication as required to treat red eyes, painful eyes, and infected eyes, eyes with styes and eyes with glaucoma. We have developed an extensive network of sub-specialists in eye care to whom we refer as more extensive treatment options are required.

Ongoing Care

It is a fact that most eye disease has no symptoms in its early stages. Additionally, the effects of most eye disease cannot be reversed. Your eyes come with no warranty. Spare parts are not factory original nor are they easily replaced. We believe in the benefits of preventative eye care. Your recall schedule will be chosen based upon your risk for disease during the periods between eye examinations. Age, family history and previous clinical history are all considered in the doctor's recommendation.

Children's Eye Care

It is estimated that more than 80% of learning is done visually. Early detection and remediation of blurred vision and eye co-ordination or focusing disorders will minimize the risk of poor visual development, and may prevent potential learning problems.

Since it is common for the eyesight of school-aged children to change regularly during development, we recommend yearly eye examinations for this age group.
